The Ushkuniks were called sea pirates and raiders from the North Russian city of Novgorod The Great, they arose in the XI-XII century and acted like Vikings, their predecessors. One of the directions of their invasions was the Volga River, there were rich tatar cities. Making rapid river raids, the Ushkuiniks founded their fortress bases in different places. On Vyatka, one of the most successful colonies of the Ushkuyniks was founded. After the battle with local pagans, in the XIV century they were able to create many fortifications on the coasts of the river Vyatka, one of them was called Khlynov.
