Svistoplyaska - Ecstasy of Spring

from Legends of The Ancient Vyatka. Part I by Ergot Skomorokh

/

about

The feast of Svistoplaska ("whistles and dances") was celebrated on Vyatka every spring. The masters made clay whistle toys in the form of birds and animals, which comes from pagan customs and animal worship. The toys were given to the children, they whistled away the cold and met with light and warmth. The audience was entertained by skomorokhs, folk artists and musicians. Ritual battles were arranged, as is customary on triznas. The church could not ban the heathen rites of celebration, and just connected the holiday with the commemoration of those killed in the internecine battle between the soldiers of Vyatka and Ustyug (XV century). From whistles and clay spheres with ornaments (solar symbols accepted on Svistoplyaska) comes the famous Dymkovskaya toy.
