about

In the old days in the Vyatka province "shilikuns" were called Christmas mummers. However, it turns out that this word has deep mythological roots.
Shilikuns (shulikuns, chilikuns / chilikuns, shalygans / shalykhany, shulyukans) - among the Russian population of the north of the European part of Russia (also the Kama region, the Urals, Siberia, the Far East), the name of the Christmas-tree evil spirits - the eve of the New Year the come to the ground, and after Baptism goes back to the rivers and ice holes.
According to legends, shilikuns run through the streets with hot coals in an iron frying pan or with an iron red-hot hook in their hands, with which they can grab people (“hook and burn”), or ride horses, troika, on mortars or “red-hot” stoves. Shilikuns on Christmastide hustle at crossroads or near ice holes, in the forest, tease drunks, circle them and push them into the mud, without causing much harm, but they can lure into an ice hole and drown in the river.
