about

On Vyatka, as throughout Russia, ordinary people believed in the spirits of nature, such as vodyanoy (water spirit), leshiy (forest spirit), mermaids etc. In the 19th and 20th centuries, toys depicting forest people made of tree cones, fir-needles, birch bark were popular. They were called mohoviks, from the word "moh" (moss). In the basket of mohoviks, stored in the Dioram Museum in Kirov, there are mushrooms of mukhomor (Amanita muscaria). Amanitas are associated with the pagan past, as they were used in the rites of the peoples who lived in Vyatka before the adoption of Christianity. Mokhoviks or Baba Yaga, like wild people or forest spirits living on the other side of nature, do not eat ordinary mushrooms, but fairy-mushrooms, for example, mukhomor, and those who come from the world of living and eats magic mushrooms also fall into the world of spirits.
