Heathen Tribe Goes to Distant Lands

from Legends of The Ancient Vyatka. Part II by Ergot Skomorokh

/

about

Before the arrival of the Russians and the Orthodox faith, Vyatka was inhabited by numerous Finno-Ugric tribes who lived in harmony with nature and confessed the pagan beliefs, the cult of ancestors, rivers, animals and trees. Unable to withstand the onslaught of the baptists, many residents adopted the new faith and mixed with the newcomer population, after several generations completely forgetting their roots. Someone kept the remnants of paganism in secret, and disguised it as folk customs and toys. The most persistent went further into deep forests, where they preserved their original faith and tradition for a long time. Their path was not easy, but it allowed them to preserve their ancient way.
